Keel, Achill Island, Co
Mayo, Ireland
Where
are they
Achill - The largest island off the Irish coast - is
bridge-connected to the mainland of Co. Mayo. Rugged
mountains, wide sandy bays and spectacular cliffs (among
them the highest in Europe - See Guinness Book of Records),
create an outdoor paradise all year round.
Artists and writers have always sojourned here, admiring
especially the quality of light unique to the island.
Keel village is located by the island's longest Blue Flag
beach and golf course, and is well endowed with shops,
restaurants and pubs.
The Sandybanks Cottages - Magic
on 4 sides
The Front
Some low dunes and 200m separate you from 4km of
quiet and breathtaking Blue Flag beach, framed by cliffs
dropping sheer to the Atlantic.
Behind
A stone thrown from the back garden will splash
in Keel Lake (don't hit the windsurfers which glide by!).
For 75% of its area the lake is sandy bottomed and 1m
deep - ideal for windsurfing (lessons available) and
great for kids. The background is surreal and majestic.
Slievemore Mountain Rises 800m beyond, hiding its secrets
- prehistoric megalithic tombs and a pre-famine village
settlement.
When to come
Most people come to Achill in the summer, and that's
reflected in the prices! Outside this time the island is
quieter, and you can get more in touch with island life and
the locals.
Generally, the gulf stream provides a mild winter, but
also more than a few showers!
"There's never a bad time
of year to visit Achill, only the wrong type of
clothes!".

To the left
A well hit 3 wood from the front garden will
land near the first tee of Achill Golf Club. It's all
natural linksland, relaxed and ideal for first timers
taking up the game and yet a good test of golf.
Great holiday golf. Green
fees £50 per week.
To the right
Just 400m to Keel Village with Post Office, Supermarket,
4 Restaurants and 3 Pubs - and lots of craic!
